Elenor Denker
Retiring from the corporate world after 50 years, in 2020 Elenor Denker found herself confined at home, as most elderly people were, trying to avoid COVID, increasingly bored and spiraling down. Towards the end of that year she decided to take an online course in sculpture. Much to her surprise and delight, she got so immersed that it began to take over her life. The course had recommended using cardboard because it was easy to find (often in dumpsters), inexpensive, and recyclable. Paper and corrugated cardboard continue to be the basis of her sculptures, often with cork or tuille or wire.
She discovered the Broward Art Guild Gallery (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) where she started exhibiting her sculptures in January of 2021, and where she has participated in group shows, mostly juried, for almost every month since. In 2021 she was awarded 2nd prize in the Anniversary show for her piece Lone Rider, which portrays a bicyclist; in that piece Elenor included a reed for the handlebars and a leaf for the bicycle seat. She often includes plants in her pieces. In the February 2023 exhibit at the Gallery her piece Why do Caged Birds Sing?, in honor of Maya Angelou, won Honorable Mention.
Elenor has also had two solo exhibits at the Pompano Beach Public Library. Her piece Golden Eagle won honorable mention at the online Rockland Arts Festival in January of 2021. Her work can be seen on her website, www.embarking.art.
