Barbara Wasserman

Barbara Wasserman’s work is a reflection of her varied life experiences. Born and educated in New York City, she moved to Mexico where she became an integral part of the Mexican Art Scene for 20 years. During this period, she was “adopted” and considered to be a Mexican Artist. Her paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Asheville Museum of Art, and the “Image of Mexico ll”, coupled with the Museum of Art Collection at the University of Texas in Austin.

Ms. Wasserman’s paintings are also included in the permanent collection of the past President of Mexico Lopez Portillo, Film Producer Fred Zimmerman and Actress Vicki Carr are among a host of other persons that have privately purchased her work. She has received awards as a result of her work being accepted in juried national and international competitions from Cornell Museum, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Armory Art Center and the Nathan Rosen Gallery.

Barbara loves to draw however her challenge is that she struggles to make the lines express exactly what I want. My paintings are truly an extension of my drawings. I like to apply my color in a thin oil wash so that the pencil can survive the paint. I prefer paper or wood over canvas because of the way it accepts the strokes of my pencil. My motivation comes from somewhere deep inside and is subjective rather than objective. Through my work I am able to explore the complex nature of being a woman.
