How To Paint A Portrait In Oils with Artist Daniel Roemmelt
INSTRUCTOR: Daniel Roemmelt, a 39-year arts educator and a full-time artist.
This course is appropriate for ages 16 to adult and is appropriate for beginners, intermediate and advanced students.
LOCATION: ArtsUnited, Inc. Gallery, 201 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors
SUPPLIES: will be provided, but if you have oil paints and brushes, and an easel, please bring them along.
DATES: March 9, 16, and 23, 2026
DURATION: 2 class options each Monday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm or 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

CLASS ONE:
- Discuss What makes for a good portrait? Investigate the work of John Singer Sargent, Vincent Van Gogh, and Rembrant.
- Demonstration: Using a grid system.
- Process: Prepare your canvas, Sketch an outline using the grid system.
- Critique/Feedback: Constant one on one and group instruction, how specific are you, are proportions correct.
CLASS TWO:
- Discuss What makes for a good portrait? Investigate Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Alice Neel and Grant Wood.
- Demonstration: How to prepare your pallet, color theory and mixing colors, proper brushes.
- Process: Block in the main shapes and values, investigate light and shadows on the face, develop a direction.
- Critique/Feedback: Continuous support throughout the entire class, are you pushing contrast, being specific, accurate?
CLASS THREE:
- Discuss: What makes for a good portrait? Investigate Chuck Close, Henri Matisse, Graydon Parrish and Kehinde Wiley.
- Demonstration: Adding layers, various brushstrokes, glazing and scumbling Process:
- Observe and adjust, continue to move toward finer details, be specific.
- Critique/Feedback: Are you using color to your advantage. How do you make your painting unique to you?
