This course is appropriate for ages 16 to adult and is appropriate for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. All materials would be provided by the instructor. But, if you have drawing supplies, please feel free to bring them along.

CLASS ONE: Introduction to the full range of drawing pencils and a value scale will be created. Various shading techniques like blending, crosshatching and stippling will be demonstrated and practiced. Through demonstrations, discussions, and handouts, the proportions of the human face will be reviewed and practiced, including full front, profile and three-quarter view. Details and shading will be added to the face.

CLASS TWO: Choosing a reference photo of a face, working with a graph over the photo, it will be enlarged onto gray paper. Using both white and black charcoal, the various elements of the face will be mapped out. Then the various light and shadowed areas, the texture and details will be developed. A complete drawing will be achieved during this class. The instructor will offer continued support throughout the process.

CLASS THREE: Using the knowledge gained in the previous two classes, we will be working from an actual model in the studio. Various drawing materials will be used, including pencils, colored pencils, charcoal, pastels and oil pastels. Concentrating on the face, with strong lighting, we will investigate methods for developing strong drawing techniques, focusing on specific details. The instructor will be drawing along with the students. Periodic critiques throughout the class will offer the students positive support and direction.
